Blue-NG’s Commitment to Biomass Sustainability

If we are going to be successful in our fight against climate change in the context of an economic downturn, and rising energy and food prices we have to make some hard choices.

Blue-NG has been created to combat climate change through the creation and
deployment of innovative renewable technologies to displace the use of fossil fuelled power generation.

We believe that there is a place for sustainable biomass in energy production if
carefully sourced and if used for CHP rather transport. CHP is the most efficient use of biomass in terms of CO2 reductions.

We accept that even sustainable bioliquids derived from biomass has downsides, for example potential food and land use competition. But we believe that at this stage it has a place alongside a portfolio of biomass solutions e.g. biogas from waste, solid biomass like wood chip.

We have a portfolio of low carbon technology solutions, some of which don’t use
biomass at all.

Our goal is to maximise the upside and minimise the downside of these low carbon technologies.

Our bioliquids sourcing policy has been developed in consultation with environmental NGOs. The policy will continue to evolve and drive the development of transparent sustainability criteria above and beyond the existing current UK and European frameworks for sustainable biomass.

By sustainability we mean resource use that aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only today but also in the future. We are developing sustainability criteria using advice from external auditors, environmental bodies, NGO’s and Government agencies.

Our goal is to procure biomass on the basis of robust and consistent sustainability and life cycle assessment criteria with the lowest possible direct and indirect environmental impact and the highest possible environmental and socio-economic benefits.

We will minimise the direct environmental impacts through the use of high efficiency plant and emissions abatement technology.

We will minimise the indirect impacts of liquid biomass use through the implementation of our sourcing policy.

We are seeking to utilise a portfolio of sustainably sourced fuel solutions including e.g. biogas from waste and in the future second generation liquid fuels.
